Before you start

Section titled “Before you start”
  • No task is running. The AI part of the box restarts during an update, and running tasks may fail.
  • Recommended: press Back up now in the panel Backups.

Steps

Update

Section titled “Update”
  1. Open Administration, sub-tab General, panel System.
  2. Press Check for updates.
  3. Newest available shows the newest release. The button now reads Update now to and the release name.
  4. Press it, then Confirm update within 10 seconds.
  5. The box checks once more for the newest release. If a newer one appeared meanwhile, nothing is installed and the button offers the newer one. Press it again.
  6. Follow the steps: “Verify the release signature”, “Download the system closure”, “Verify the closure (sha256 and signature)”, “Import the closure into the Nix store”, “Switch to the new system generation”, “Restart the assistant runtime”, “Self-check (services and health endpoints)”, “Record the release and prune old generations”.
  7. During the switch the page shows “Portal restarting, reconnecting”. Wait. It continues by itself.

Cancel an update

Section titled “Cancel an update”

Cancel update is shown while the update downloads and checks. Press it, then Confirm stop. “It stops before switching: nothing changes on the appliance, and what was downloaded is kept for the next Update now.” After the switch has started, an update cannot be cancelled.

Roll back

  1. Press Roll back, then Confirm roll back.
  2. The box switches to the previous version. The portal and the AI part restart.

Roll back is greyed out when there is no previous version, for example on a box that was never updated.

What you see afterwards

  • Running release shows the new release.
  • The outcome line, for example “Now running …, generation …, took … min … s”.
  • “reboot pending (new kernel)”: the update is active, but part of it needs a restart of the computer. Restart the box when convenient.

What happens by itself

Section titled “What happens by itself”
  • The box looks for a new release once a day. It never installs it by itself.
  • If the switch fails, or the self-check after the switch fails (it waits up to 7 minutes), the box returns to the previous version by itself.
  • The box keeps the three newest versions.
  • The box never restarts the computer during an update.
  • A slow download is retried. If it still fails: “The download from GitHub is too slow or stopped. Nothing was changed. Try again later.”
  • An older release is never offered: “not offered: older than the running release”.

If the page shows “The session ended while the update ran; sign in again to see the result.”, sign in again. If it shows “The portal has not answered for 15 minutes”, reload the page and look at Details (update log).
